Lucayan Tropical Produce : Lucayan Tropical's Hydroponic Greenhouse ![]() We grow our vegetables in a state of the art greenhouse located in Nassau, The Bahamas. Our greenhouse is a Venlo Greenhouse, a classic Dutch greenhouse with a glass covering. Our Venlo Greenhouse is built of top-quality galvanized steel and an aluminium superstructure that was modified to withstand hurricane weather conditions. All open windows in the greenhouse are covered with insect net to ensure insect pests do not enter our greenhouse. These benefits of growing vegetables in this controlled environment allow us to produce a top quality product in a highly efficient manner. Our plants are grown using hydroponic techniques which means that we use water soluble nutrients to supply the plants nutritional needs instead of using soil. The greenhouse infrastructure allows us to put many plants into a small area and make use of vertical growing space which means we can produce much more produce in small area as compared to field production. Integrated Pest Management Practices (IPM) Lucayan Tropical Produce practices an intensive Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program that uses beneficial insects to eliminate pests and stimulate healthy plant growth. In fact, we are the leader in the IPM movement in The Bahamas. Water is conserved and recycled. Lucayan Tropical Produce collects rain water from our 7 acres of roof area and stores this water in 1 million gallon rain tanks so we do not need to pull water from the local water table. Lucayan Tropical Produce actually uses less water than field growing, due to two factors: Lucayan Tropical Produce recycles water and our greenhouse controls humidity and therefore water loss through evaporation. Our state-of-the-art greenhouses deliver water directly to the root of the plant. 100% of the water used by Lucayan Tropical Produce reaches the plants with no waste runoff into the environment. We don’t use animal waste fertilizers, so the recycled water that nourishes Lucayan Tropical Produce plants cannot be contaminated by animal waste runoff that may carry deadly e. coli and other microorganisms Land conservation. Lucayan Tropical Produce farming yields 20-30 times more product per acre than conventional field production utilizing far less water per pound of produce. This high yield means fewer acres needed for growing and more open space left to nature.
